8-year-old hit by car while getting on school bus in Mathews County

This morning shortly after 7:30 a.m. Virginia State Police responded to the 17300 block of Route 14 in Mathews County for an accident involving a pedestrian.

When police arrived they found an 8-year-old child struck by a moving vehicle as the child was attempting to get on a school bus.

The school bus was stopped eastbound at 17300 John Clayton Highway (Route 14), with proper functioning equipment and lights activated.
As the child crossed the roadway, a Dodge Neon struck the child.

Police say the driver, 69-year-old Robert L. Armellino, did not see the child or the school bus. They say he proceeded through the activated lights and stop sign, hitting the child.

Police say the child will be transferred to Riverside Regional Hospital in Newport News. He is listed in serious condition at this time.
Armellino was charged with failure to stop for a school bus.
