Officials say donation meters helped more than 1,000 homeless people last year

Virginia Beach leaders say their homeless outreach, which includes the bright red donation meters now in place at the Oceanfront, helped more than a thousand people last year.

The meters installed in August, 2010, collected only $2,000 dollars in spare change. That’s less than anticipated, but business sponsorships, other city funding, churches and charities help filled the gaps.

The city and other charities spent around $30,000 as part of the program, officials said.

City Council members said they were willing to extend the program, and perhaps add eight more donation meters.
